Astonishing Things

Royal Academy of Arts

How do you introduce a literary giants lesser known artwork?

Exhibition design for ‘Astonishing Things, The Drawings of Victor Hugo’ at the Royal Academy. Victor Hugo was a French novelist, playwright, poet and politician. Hugo’s writing (which includes ‘Les Misérables’ and ‘The Hunchback of Notre Dame’) had extraordinary global influence.

In private Hugo would make fantastical drawings. The exhibition design plays with Hugo’s parallel practices of writing and drawing and his relationship to creating near water. The exhibition delivers Hugo’s works with an ethereal lightness — emulating the state of reverie the drawings were created in.
